Introducing 'voluntarycoach'.
The voluntary coach project is an extension of the work and experiences of the Listening Matters project that started out in 2012. It continues the central theme and belief that listening skills can help and support others in dealing with change - doing this through the use of mentoring and coaching principles and values.
Why voluntary?
We started mentoring and coaching back in the 1990s, taking the skills into training and teaching and supporting out of work adults. At the same time there were some who were involved who talked only about the money they could make from their clients. In 2005 a decision was made to carve out some time and skills which would be offered for free to people on low incomes, on the edges of society and those who didn't need to go bunjee jumping or team building to change their lives.
The voluntary time and skills commitment remains today in this project and we're looking to listen, learn and help and support others for a few hours a week, keeping things simple online and by phone.
Free and independent.
Just because something is free doesn't mean it is bad or can't be trusted. We've listened to people in the military, emergency services, in civilian life, we have a great respect for ex forces veterans.
We're not funded from the public purse so have no targets, deadlines, no suffocating service conditions or policies and we don't tick boxes. Our decision to help or not is final as we won't replace or duplicate existing help that is out there. Not being funded means we keep our objectivity and independence.
